How to: Coffee in Portland

Alright everyone, welcome to this weeks episode of Lucy's soapbox. I have gotten up on it and will be speaking for about the next 10 minutes. So sit tight, cause I think you'll benefit in one way or another. Well maybe not, but just give it a try :)

As many know, Portland has been well titled as hipster-central. Young American's have road-tripped in droves to move to the good 'ole stump town. They come here for many reasons, some of which include waiting in line for brunch, eating from fusion food carts, and gaining all-access freedom to wear flannels and puffy vests. Most importantly, they come for the coffee. The experience of coffee has become a millennial addiction. And trust me, I am no exception. I love the aroma of fresh brewed joe and thoroughly believe that there is almost nothing better than finding a small corner table in a WiFi filled cafe. I mean, I am a die-hard Starbucks enthusiast in all areas, but being a Portlander, I also have a serious respect for independent coffee shops. And in Portland they are abundant. In fact, I enjoy them so much that I wrote one of my supplemental application essay about the importance of coffee shops. That is a much longer story that you definitely don't have time to read, but hey, I have to prove I love PDX somehow!

Long story short, I thought that I would compile a list of the best places to catch a cup when your in Stump town.

When I think of coffee shops in Portland, Bipartisan always crosses my mind first. They are located in the Montavilla neighborhood and are a stone's throw away from the Academy Theater on Stark. If you are looking for a place to study that has character and a little bit of grit, this is the one for you. I recommend trying one of their bagel sandwiches and a delicious piece of Key lime Cream Pie.

Well, you're wrong, it's not cheating to choose a coffee shop on Hawthorne. Even though its an obvious pick, it is pretty great. Oui Presse is a classic, quiet, and quaint coffee shop on the east side. It is minimal but houses one of the best magazine collections I have ever seen. If you're going to visit, I recommend getting the beans on toast with the most delicious iced mocha known to man.

This one is just classic. In the heart of downtown, Case Study is one of the best places to grab a cup downtown. It has gotten pretty popular, so seating is sometimes scarce, but their coffee is delish. There a now a few different locations in downtown, each with their own personalities. My personal favorite is the one downtown as it is the perfect place to stop before shopping! Anyway, this is a good place to go if you want a true Portland vibe.

Upstream Coffee is so unique. I love it. I was strolling along the South Waterfront a couple weeks back and stumbled on this gem. With a million dollar view and a fun vibe, Upstream is definitely worth the walk. Its great to enjoy a cup of joe while looking at the grandeur of the Willamette river. And if you disagree, I think you should try it out. It is a hole in the wall and may not be the best place to study for hours, but the positives definitely make up for it.
