Record Roundup: #4
As the sun slips into the quiet period of dusk, I sit down to share with you all. It was such a beautiful day in my home town, that I just feel the need to spread the good cheer! I think at this point, the inconsistency of my postings on here has become the only constant.
So, with the shock of that egregious irony behind us, I want to show you what I have rounded up in the past few weeks since I talked to you last! Quick side-note: I have changed the title of this series from "Goodwill Gold" to "Record Roundup". I just thought it was unfair to keep the name when most of the vinyl I collect is coming from places other than Goodwill. In fact, in Portland walking into Goodwill with the intent to buy a used record, is like walking up to a stranger and asking to be robbed! It is ridiculous the amount of money they are asking for within city limits just because they know that people here care about records. Thats straight up staging the game if you ask me. If I go 20 miles out of the city, I know Goodwill is charging dollars below what they are asking here. Unfair, if you ask me!
Anyway, I have found new sources to get my vinyl fix on a college student's budget and I want to share my finds with you. So, without further ado...

This album easily stands in the hall of fame of best records. To me, a person who was raised wholeheartedly on the musical talent that is Mark Knopfler (so much so, I wrote my college admissions essay about his effect on my family), I have full authority to say that this is some impressive work. The groups first album, released in 1978, this piece of music mastery not only showcases their instrumental talent but their emotional connection to the project as well. Please, seriously, please give it a listen.

So, I have become newly obsessed with Mrs. Parton. She is incredible. I am not a huge fan of "Greatest Hits"albums, but for Dolly I made an exception. This album was released in 1975, so it is many of her earlier hits. However, Dolly never strays from her straightforward storytelling style, and it shows.
Favorite tune - "Coat of Many Colors"

With my recent interest in the early 70's music vibe, I have discovered James Taylor. I know, to many this may seem obvious, but it is a new departure from the 60's swing that I usually listen to. This is Taylor's second album, and his first with Warner Bro's. It was released in 1970 and is famed for its hit track "Fire and Rain". In my opinion, yes thats a good song, but the whole album is worth a listen for sure.
Favorite tune - "Sweet Baby James"

Before having this record, I was completely ignorant of Laine's work. This album, released in 1961, is kitchy and satisfyingly hilarious. Laine is known for his zesty country style but this album takes that character to the absolute top of the scale. It is a fun harkening back to the old west and is worth a listen - especially if you like your music to be accompanied by quirky lyrics from another time.
Favorite tune - "Wanted Man"
