Family Traditions

Judging by the blistering sun and never-ending days, summer seems to be in full swing. For me, that means many things. Firstly, that I will be hot and grumpy most of the time. Secondly, it means that I have an unlimited number of jobs to accomplish, some assigned and some chosen. Last but not least, it means that I get to spend some quality time with my family.

It is an absolute treasure to be able to spend family time. To me, it is one of the most valuable things in life. When I look back on all of our summers together, I picture us gallivanting through Alpine towns much like the Von Trapp children with Maria. Is this the reality? Absolutely not. Our time together consists mostly of my brother and I bickering like old women, constant discussions about where to eat next, and a very limited amount of gallivanting. But this doesn't keep us from having a wonderful time. The bickering, munching, and constant chatter is what makes it a cherish-able family experience.

However, I understand that this is not the same for everyone. All families function differently. Some better than ours, and some less so. And that is okay. The good news is, you don't have to restrict your travel buddies to just family! It can be anyone from your best friend to the random Starbucks barista that you have unintentionally befriended.

If you don't have a summer fun companion just yet, I suggest you find one immediately! I know that is much easier said than done, but the pay-off is well worth it.

So, in the spirit of summer fun, I thought that I would share some of the traditions that my family carries on when summer comes around.

1. Ashland, Oregon and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival

I have been going to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival since I was younger than young. Not only does this mean that I am a seasoned play geek, but it also entitles me to be a "tour-guide" of sorts. When it comes to vacationing in the summer in Ashland, I can describe a perfect trip:

Three days, two plays (one indoor and one outdoor), one movie, a visit to the Standing Stone Brewery's rooftop patio, a walk through Lithia Park, and a quick stroll through Ashland Creek. Sounds like a lot to fit into three days, but trust me... you won't want to miss any of it.

2. The Oregon Coast

For those that live in the Pacific Northwest, this may seem like an overly-obvious suggestion. However, for those looking for spots in the PNW, here you go:

I am not exaggerating when I say that the Oregon Coast is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Lush greens, ocean views for miles, and air that will clear your lungs of all the pollution. If you are looking for small beach towns, try Cannon Beach or Yachats. Stop and smell the ocean air!

3. Disneyland

Disneyland... A vacation spot not for the faint of heart. Obviously a place that brings out the child in all of us, Disneyland is a life-changing experience. Whether you visit once in a lifetime or 300 times, it is still magical. It may be different for some, but I spend most warm summer nights dreaming about a cool dole whip or a chilly thrill through the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

4. The Oregon Zoo

Okay, I know that compared to Disneyland this may seem a bit like a... why though? But I know that if visited you would be pleasantly surprised. The Oregon Zoo is not only a family friendly place, but it is the home to many outstanding creatures. Just look at that cute face!

Anyway, I believe that a visit to the Oregon Zoo is a summer necessary. The link to their website is here: https://www.oregonzoo.org/

5. Columbia River Gorge Highway Scenic Byway Drive

This is definitely a WOW trip. The Columbia River Gorge is an astounding beauty. The 3-5 hour drive through it will amaze you at every turn, swerve, and hurdle. Though this picture seems too good to be true, I am fairly certain that I have seen it with my own eyes more than once. I hope that someday you can take this journey and see it for yourself ( with your travel buddy of course)!

Now, this is only a quick introduction into the host of family traditions that I enjoy most. I am sure that everyone has a place where they feel peace. Where they go to relax and de-stress. Our world is busy and hurried with little to no time to sit and think. I think it is an invaluable investment to take time for fun. For joy. For yourself to breath.

If you are looking for a space like this, take a chance on one of these.
